Shoulder Pain Relief Strategies

Shoulder pain can affect our ability to sleep, perform one’s job fully, exercise and to take care of our homes and yards. Shoulder pain can range from mildly aggravating to excruciating and debilitating. In looking for pain relief most people want to try something that is effective, simple, and cost effective. This article will discuss shoulder pain and offer nonsurgical, drug free, treatment options to gain shoulder pain relief.

Two aspects of treating and eliminating shoulder pain should be considered. The first is through gentle, safe, and effective treatment. I have seen countless times in my 38 years of chiropractic practice, there is an association between shoulder pain and mechanical problems of the spinal areas of the neck and upper back. If there is a misalignment of the spinal bones of the neck and upper back, it can cause irritation to the joints of the spine and pinch nerves, contributing to shoulder pain. Additionally, a chiropractor will examine and evaluate the entire shoulder girdle, including the shoulder blade bone, which is called the scapula, and where the rib bones form joints with the breastbone. The scapula at the back of the shoulder, and the rib joints in the front of the shoulder, should move freely and not be locked up or fixated. Chiropractors perform treatment to correct the condition by utilizing a chiropractic adjustment. Chiropractic adjustments are very safe, gentle and will reposition a malalignment of the spinal bones and restore, proper movement to other areas of the shoulder girdle. Patients respond favorably to this care and find a great deal of relief of their shoulder discomfort.

The second aspect of helping a patient to obtain shoulder pain relief are the home remedies and steps that patients themselves can perform. I will list a couple tips in this article.

Upper body posture is essential in helping to bring about shoulder pain relief. If a person has slouched shoulders and forward head posture, it contributes to shoulder pain. It also makes it especially difficult for an injured shoulder to heal. To correct poor posture, patients can do stretching exercises for areas in the front of the upper body and strengthening exercises for the back areas. These exercises can be performed at home and typically, require no more than 10 minutes daily.

When shoulder pain exists, there is usually inflammation. To reduce inflammation, we can use cold pack applications to reduce swelling and discomfort. The cold pack one uses needs to stay cold long enough to penetrate down to the area of the body where the inflammation is occurring. Applying ice for 10 minutes to the shoulder joint area is sufficient. It helps if the cold pack is flexible and molds to the area. The key to using cold packs is to use them repetitively. Three applications per day is the minimum required. If possible, optimum usage is five or six times per day.

There are other remedies that chiropractors, like me, recommend in helping people gain shoulder pain relief. Seeing a chiropractor may be one of the most effective actions one can take to find a simple, cost-effective approach to finally live a life free of shoulder pain.
