Hip Pain Relief Strategies

Hip pain can affect our ability to walk, exercise and move about. It can interfere with getting normal sleep, being able to take care of our homes and yards, and to perform one’s job fully. Hip pain can range from mildly annoying to all-encompassing and disabling. In looking for pain relief most people want to try something that is effective, easy, and not expensive. This article will discuss hip pain and offer drug free, nonsurgical treatment options to gain hip pain relief.

Two aspects of treating and eliminating hip pain need to be considered. The first is through safe, effective treatment. I have seen countless times in my 38 years of chiropractic practice, there is an association between hip pain and mechanical problems of the pelvis. If there is a misalignment of the pelvis and the sacroiliac joints a person may experience hip pain. Chiropractors perform treatment to correct the condition by utilizing a chiropractic adjustment. Chiropractic adjustments are very safe, gentle and will reposition a malalignment of the bones. Patients tend to respond to this care and find a great deal of relief of their hip discomfort.

The second aspect of helping a patient to obtain hip pain relief are the home remedies and obligations that patients themselves can perform. I will list a couple tips in this article.

Core muscle strength and stability is directly related to the likelihood of hip injuries. I always instruct my patients how to strengthen, safely and easily, their abdominal, back, pelvic and hip muscles to achieve hip pain relief. Stretching exercises of the hamstring, thigh and buttock muscles, need to be introduced and performed. These exercises can be performed at home and typically, require no more than 10 to 15 minutes daily.

When hip pain exists, there is usually inflammation. To reduce inflammation, we can use an ice pack to reduce swelling and discomfort. The ice pack one uses needs to stay cold long enough to penetrate down to the area of the body where the inflammation is occurring. Applying ice for 20 minutes to the hip joint area is sufficient. It helps if the ice pack is flexible and molds to the hip area. The key to using ice packs is to use them repetitively. Three applications of ice per day is the minimum required. If possible, optimum usage is five or six times per day.

There are other remedies that chiropractors, like me, recommend in helping people gain hip pain relief. Seeing a chiropractor may be one of the most effective actions one can take to find a simple, cost-effective approach to finally live a life free of hip pain.
